Hackett backs Thorpe

Grant Hackett believes attitude rather than illness and injury is the only hurdle preventing five-time Olympic champion Ian Thorpe from recapturing his best.

Thorpe has not swum at a major international meet since the Athens Olympics and, after taking 2005 off, had his Commonwealth Games dreams shattered by illness.

However, Hackett has backed Thorpe to regain his best, but on a proviso.

Hackett sets pace yet again

DUAL Olympic champion Grant Hackett is seamlessly reclaiming the distance throne he temporarily abdicated when he underwent shoulder surgery last December.

In only his second competition since the operation that ruled him out of the Melbourne Commonwealth Games, Hackett set the fastest 800m freestyle time in the world in the past year in a short course pool.

At the Victorian short course titles at the weekend, the 25-year-old distance king demonstrated that he was right on track to defend his three world titles in Melbourne next March.

Swimming virtually on his own, he set a time of 7min 40.67sec, faster than Russian Yuri Prilukov’s winning time at the world championships in Shanghai in April (7:41.94).

Thorpe swims against tide of history

IF Ian Thorpe were almost any other swimmer, Australia’s head coach Alan Thompson would be preparing to write him off as a gold medal prospect at the next Olympics.

“For a normal person, he would be at that point now,” Thompson says. “But he’s not a normal person. He’s one of the greatest athletes we have seen.”

Australia’s greatest Olympian has not raced at international level since his Athens triumph almost two years ago. He took six months out of the pool completely, got back into shape late last year, then raced solidly at the NSW titles last December and the Commonwealth Games trials in February.

But then things went pear-shaped.

Champs to swim at night, defying US TV

THE finals of the world swimming championships in Melbourne will be held at night, despite intense pressure from overseas TV giants to stage them in the morning. The broadcasters had pushed for morning finals to coincide with US prime-time TV.But the sport’s governing body, FINA, told organisers yesterday the heats would be at 10am and finals at 7pm for the March event.

“We are certainly relieved that common sense has prevailed and now we can get on with the job of preparing for a traditional program,” a senior official told the Herald Sun last night.
