Diving in at deep end

SWIMMING sensation Grant Hackett and his fiancee Candice Alley are preparing to take the plunge in April _ with the bride-to-be commissioning the Olympian of dress designers, Alex Perry, to create her gown.

While their big day is set to be an A-list affair, singer/songwriter Alley wants people to know her relationship with the aquatic hero is not all froth and bubbles - they have more in common than people might think.

“When he was 14 or 15 he was in a band, and he appreciates music, and when I was that age I was a swimmer for my school,'’ Alley said.

The pair will exchange vows after Hackett competes in the World Swimming Championships in Melbourne in March.

The 26-year-old Gold Coaster yesterday said the pain in his right shoulder had returned but he did not need more surgery to correct the problem, rather it was a case of managing the injury properly.

“It has been a little bit sore for me, just with the increased work load,” said Australian swim team captain Hackett.

“There is no reason why I can’t train as well, as hard and as long as I have done in the past — as long as I do everything correctly and work with the right people.
